I just lost a whole lot of cloud files...
It finally happened - I lost access to my stupid Microsoft account and have now lost access to all my One Drive files too. It was my fault. Well, mine and the chaotic digital mess of usernames and passwords and emails we have to keep track of in the 21st century. I won't even bother to go into the stupid details.
After going through the recovery process many times and even raising a ticket, they've just said nope, and have locked the account entirely - going against their terms of service, apparently. One rogue login attempt from some stranger in India, and suddenly I'm out. I'm done. I'm toast. My files are locked down. All the thousands of photos, documents, and so on. Yep.
Never mind the fact that we pay for a service each year. Never mind the bank receipt I sent them as evidence. Apparently, it's not enough information to verify my identity. What even is identity in the 21st century beyond the digital world anymore? I'm not even sure.
So, fuck them. Fuck Microsoft and all the stupid games. A mate has helped me set up Nextcloud - much better by the way - and I back everything up to his endless home servers, with planned redundancy backups. I only ever kept One Drive around because I was too cheap to pay for better cloud storage. But lets face it, this shit just happens. It's not the first time I've lost a stack of files and probably won't be the last.
